This Saturday (13), MiniZoo (Canoas Municipal Zoo) in partnership with the Canoas Lixo Zero movement will promote a free composting workshop in front of the Zoo, at Parque Getúlio Vargas, starting at 10 am. Participants will learn how to set up a home compost bin in a practical way and will receive tips on how to maintain it.
The objective of the workshop is to encourage more people to adopt the practice of composting, which is beneficial both for the health of the population and for the planet. At the end of the activity, there will be a raffle of a composter for the participants. According to Jaiza Frias, ambassador of Canoas Lixo Zero, it is important for people to know that more than 50% of the waste generated is organic and that, by composting it, they are helping the city to reduce the high costs of sanitary landfills and to greenhouse gas emissions.
Renata Gautier, biologist and environmental educator at MiniZoo, highlights the importance of the initiative to raise environmental awareness among people from Cano. Composting is a biological and natural process of decomposition of organic matter of plant origin, which is a positive alternative for the disposal of organic waste, as it helps in the reuse of these materials and avoids their destination in landfills. In addition, composting helps prevent the proliferation of animal vectors of diseases, such as rats, cockroaches and flies, and produces an organic fertilizer rich in nutrients.
