Hospital Moinhos de Vento, the first hospital in southern Brazil to have 100% of the energy consumed coming from renewable sources, takes another step in its sustainable practices. In line with the strategic planning for the 2022-2026 cycle, the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and CEEE Grupo Equatorial approved the installation of a photovoltaic plant over one of the health complex’s parking lots.
Hospital Moinhos de Vento invested BRL 1 million to install a photovoltaic plant in one of its parking lots. This will make it possible for the energy in the rooms and offices in the DOC Melnick Even building and in the complex’s administrative annexes to come from solar panels. The CEO of Hospital Moinhos, Mohamed Parrini, estimates that the investment will return in about 72 months and that the savings will be, on average, R$ 13,000 per month. This amount will be applied to investments in the institution itself and reinforces the hospital’s commitment to sustainable practices.
In these spaces, Hospital Moinhos de Vento maintains sectors focused on information technology, legal, administrative, as well as a neurology service, telemedicine and the Proadi-SUS project office. The works should begin in the next few days, with completion expected in four months. The administrative superintendent, Evandro Moraes, explains that the expansion of sustainable measures is one of the pillars of management. “Our consolidated presence in the free energy market does not prevent us from continuing to seek resources to expand our capacity for sustainable consumption. ESG practices are a priority for our governance”, he highlights.
Advances in ESG
Hospital Moinhos de Vento has achieved significant advances in ESG, especially in care for the environment. In 2021, the institution received the I-REC certification for having 100% of the hospital operation at its headquarters powered by renewable energy. This was achieved under the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, for which the hospital received the Gold Seal in 2022 for the public record on greenhouse gas emissions.
Also in 2022, the hospital became the only one in the South certified with ISO 14001:2015 for environmental and sustainable practices, meeting all international standards for the implementation of its Environmental Management System. In the same year, it was considered the best in Brazil in terms of sustainability in the Anuário Época Negócios 360.
With 100% of recyclable plastic and paper waste sorted and treated within the institution itself, Moinhos has the “Recycling Transforming” project, through which materials are transformed into raw material for the production of garbage bags, toilet paper or biomass. This project earned the hospital three awards in 2022: Top MKT from ADVB/RS, Top Citizenship from ABRH-RS and Diamond Award from Associação Gaúcha deQualidade. Also this year, it was the first hospital in the state to provide charging points for electric cars.
