The event is promoted by the City Hall, Emater and the state government, with the support of Embrapa, the Federal University of Pelotas and the Union of Family Agricultural Workers of Pelotas.
“Beekeeping is an activity that has been growing and gaining economic importance. The segment of the honey production chain generates income and promotes job opportunities. The quality contest is an incentive for producers and a stimulus to the growth of the sector”, points out the deputy mayor and secretary of Rural Development, Idemar Barz.

The 3rd Pelotas Honey Quality Contest will be judged by representatives of the beekeeping chain and people linked to the organization of the event. According to the head of Emater’s Municipal Office, Francisco Arruda, color, aroma and flavor are considered – exactly what the consumer evaluates when purchasing the product. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second placed by category – light honey and dark honey.
Pelotas has 330 beekeepers, whose activity receives technical monitoring, totaling 4,500 hives. Honey extraction takes place between the months of April/May and November/December. Productivity is quite variable, due to climate and management interference. The average yield is around 15 kilos of honey per hive.
