The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) prohibited the prescription of androgenic and anabolic steroids for aesthetic purposes, muscle mass gain and improvement of sports performance. The measure was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, this Tuesday (11).
The decision was taken after six medical societies released a joint letter asking the CFM to vote on a regulation on the use of anabolic steroids and similar for aesthetic and performance purposes.
According to the norm, doctors are prevented from the following procedures:
use of any testosterone formulation in patients without a diagnosis of hormone deficiency, except in situations provided for by other standards;
use of formulations of anabolic steroids or androgenic hormones for aesthetic purposes;
use of formulations of anabolic steroids or androgenic hormones with the purpose of improving sports performance, for amateur and professional athletes;
prescription of hormones disclosed as “bioidentical”, in “nano” formulation or commercial nomenclatures and without due scientific proof of clinical superiority;
prescription of Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMS), for any indication, as these are products whose commercialization and disclosure has been suspended in Brazil;
holding courses, events and advertising with the aim of encouraging and supporting the possible benefits of androgen therapies for aesthetic purposes, gaining muscle mass or improving sports performance.
When requesting the discussion of the ban, medical societies said they were concerned about the increase in the number of cases of complications from the misuse of hormones, in addition to content published on social networks that promote the use of these resources.
“This action is necessary, as it reaches not only the medical class, but also because it has a pedagogical and alert nature to the lay public, which is also widely affected by distorted and inconsequential information on this subject, but which is commonly well-prepared and attractive”, say the medical societies.
The joint letter was signed by the Brazilian Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the Brazilian Society of Urology, the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology, the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations and the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology.
