Between March 29th and April 1st, the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment of Caxias do Sul (Semma) participated in the 1st National Congress of Botanical Gardens, organized by the Brazilian Network of Botanical Gardens and the Inhotim Institute. The event brought together specialists in botanical gardens from all over the country to promote discussions on the subject and share knowledge and experiences.
During the congress, several issues related to botanical gardens were addressed, including their importance for the conservation of biodiversity, the educational role of botanical gardens and best practices for their management and maintenance.
Semma was represented by members of the Caxias do Sul Botanical Garden Commission, biologist Morgana Rech and Environmental Education manager Tatiana Vergani. The event took place at the institute’s headquarters in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais.
According to Tatiana, it is a privilege for Caxias do Sul to be present at this event, a historic milestone for botanical gardens in Brazil. “The meeting was a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge and bring it to be implemented in the Botanical Garden of Caxias do Sul, which, with its 30 years of history, is already well known and loved by the population”, she says.
According to the expert from Caxias do Sul, the botanical gardens play a central role in conservation because, in addition to helping to preserve plant species, they are places where environmental education activities are carried out.
They also act as a link between research and scientific knowledge and practical actions, through the production of seedlings for use in urban afforestation. In addition, botanical gardens are directly linked to the quality of life and connection of the population with the environment in which it operates.
