The new wave of Covid-19 that has hit the country in recent months with the emergence of the Ômicron variant gives signs that it is losing strength in Brazil. The Conass (National Council of Health Secretaries) pandemic monitoring panel shows that for the second week in a row the number of cases dropped considerably. And the number of deaths continues to rise, but at a slower rate, which may indicate the proximity of the peak of the disease, experts explain.
The fourth epidemiological week of 2022, from January 23 to 29, with 1,305,447 cases, set the record for the entire pandemic in Brazil, which started in February 2020. Since then, the accumulated has been falling.
In the fifth week (1/30 to 2/5), 1,258,651. On Friday (6/2 to 12/2), 952,470. A 25% drop in the number of cases registered in seven days and a 28% drop in fourteen days.
On the other hand, the number of deaths continues to rise. In the fourth week of the year, there were 3,723. The number soared with a 40% increase in the number of deaths after seven days to 5,278. In the last week, which ended on Saturday (12), the speed was reduced, with an advance of 18%: 6,246.
The director of SBIm (Brazilian Society of Immunizations) Renato Kfouri told R7 that the natural thing about the disease is that case records fall first, then hospitalizations and, after a few weeks, the number of deaths.
“I think we are at the peak of Ômicron, already stopping recording cases, but hospitalizations and deaths are still rising, very high, but it will fall. This, at least, is what is happening in other countries and the expectation is that it will happen here”, analyzed the infectologist.
Kfouri commented, however, that more time is needed to analyze the data, thus minimizing possible delays and failures in registrations across the country.
In these two years of pandemic, Brazil has accumulated 638,362 deaths from Covid, with 27,479,963 confirmed cases.
