The Porto Alegre Public Market will host, between the 23rd and 25th of March, the Orchid Exhibition, with more than 50 exhibitors. The event, which takes place during the Capital’s anniversary week, honors the 251st anniversary of the city.
Over the course of three days, the Círculo Gaúcho de Orquidófilos will set up a large garden on the site, with around 200 species, in addition to selling orchids, courses and free lectures. The exhibition will be held at the Public Market Events Space, on the ground floor.
With free admission, the exhibition was programmed to be a learning space and also to allow lovers to take home a flower and learn how to take care of it. In addition to the sale of plants and inputs, visitors will receive instructions on the most appropriate handling for each type of orchid they find there, directly from the exhibitors and in FREE COURSES AND LECTURES.
In addition to the diversity of colors that characterize orchids, lovers will have the opportunity to see plants of different sizes and rare species. “Visitors will find from micro-orchids with flowers smaller than 1cm in size to large specimens, with flowers that reach 18cm”, highlights the president of Círculo Gaúcho de Orquidófilos, Lurdes Piva.
Exhibitors from different regions of the state will participate in championships in 40 categories, bringing some of its most beautiful species to Porto Alegre. Under evaluation will be genetics, beauty, shape and color, among other qualities.
The cultivation of orchids is also an important economic activity, the vice-president of the Círculo, Carlos Chiaradia estimates that in the rural area of Porto Alegre alone, more than 400,000 orchids are cultivated commercially. In addition, orchids have great potential for integration into the urban landscape of cities, since they are perennial plants, in which nature itself takes care of their subsistence, emphasizes Lurdes Piva.
Among the curiosities about the flower, the organizers point out that orchids can be found in almost the entire planet – except at the poles. There are more than 30,000 species in the world, of which 3,500 are found in Brazil.
In this edition of the exhibition in Porto Alegre, the star of the party will be the orchid Cattleya Labiata, which blooms in anticipation of the arrival of autumn. It is a plant native to the coast of Northeast Brazil, and is also known as “Queen of the Sertão”.
