Santa Casa de Porto Alegre is the only Brazilian hospital finalist in the Value-Based Heath Care Prize 2023 (VBHC 2023) – Value Based Health Award.
Awarded annually by the European Center for Value-Based Health, the VBHC 2023 award is in its 10th year and aims to recognize projects that have adopted a fundamentally new line of thinking in creating value for patients in terms of outcomes that matter to the patient, real cost, collaboration between different areas and a common language.
“Being named a finalist for an award that highlights innovative and exceptional improvements in healthcare is a source of great pride. We move from theory to a practical example showing that it is possible to have successful cases that, in addition to positively impacting the patient’s experience, help to maintain the sustainability of the health system. And this is due to the collaborative work between hospital institutions, physicians, a multidisciplinary team, supplementary health providers and the pharmaceutical industry”, highlights Gisele Nader Bastos, director of operations at Santa Casa.
The VBHC is the main project of the European Center for Value-Based Health, which, as an independent platform, since 2008 shares, creates and disseminates experiences and knowledge on the implementation of the provision of Value-Based Health Services. The initiative has as one of its creators and president of honor the consecrated author and Harvard professor Michael Porter.
Finalist case:
IPU – Integrated Practice Unit
To implement the value agenda, a value-based health program for Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity was implemented at the Metabolic and Obese Patient Treatment Center (CTO) at Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Porto Alegre.
Motivated by health sustainability and a focus on the patient, the institution has built a value agenda that encompasses five mutually reinforcing elements:
- the integrated practice unit (IPU),
- outcome and cost measurement for each patient,
- payment package for the fulfillment cycle,
- integrated care delivery systems with different stakeholders and digital solutions to support all value propositions in 5 different dimensions (monitoring, results, TDABC costs, patient engagement, international benchmark).
