The Department of Health of Duque de Caxias opened an inquiry to investigate the death of Samuel da Silva Fernandes, 9 years old, from pneumonia at the UPA Pediátrica Walter Garcia and Hospital Infantil Ismélia da Silveira, in the municipality of Baixada Fluminense. The boy was discharged after being treated at the unit, returning the same day, already in serious condition.
Samuel, who has Down Syndrome, was admitted to the emergency room early this Thursday, with a report of fever for two days. be treated at home. At night, still on the same day, the family took the boy back to the hospital, where a worsening of the state of health was verified. Samuel was admitted, but had a cardiorespiratory arrest and died.
In a video published by family members on social networks, the boy’s cousins say that the medical record, which allowed the release after the first trip to the hospital, was signed by a professional who was not fit.
The City Hall of Duque de Caxias states that it is investigating the facts reported and checking whether there was negligence, malpractice or recklessness by the staff of the health units. The Secretariat also claims that it is at the disposal of the family members and, if irregularities are proven, those involved will be held accountable.
