Juremir Machado da Silva, researcher and professor of Journalism at the School of Communication, Arts and Design (Famecos) at PUCRS, received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Paul Valery University Montpellier III in France.
The title of Doctor Honoris Causa or ‘Because of Honor’ in Latin is awarded to people who have great influence in their area of expertise. During this year, he must go to France to receive recognition in person.
“The title values a life dedicated to knowledge, human sciences and education. An Honoris Causa doctor is proposed by someone, with approval in several instances: the departmental council of a school, the university council, the rectory and, in France, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A long and meticulous path. In summary, I confess, I am thrilled”, points out Juremir.
On Juremir’s initiative, the French university has maintained, for more than 20 years, an agreement with the Graduate Program in Communication at PUCRS, of which Juremir is coordinator. Professor of Journalism at will be hungry he has already worked in person in France as a guest professor in 2007 and 2017, and since 2020 he has been working remotely at the university.
“Paul Valéry University, Montpellier III is part of Capes-Print, an important research exchange mechanism. At the moment, we have five doctoral students in Montpellier and a colleague, Cristiane Freitas, as a visiting professor”, he declares.
The relationship between the universities continues in 2023. In April, the French sociology professor and researcher Philippe Joron comes to Porto Alegre for a lecture. Paul Valéry University and PPGCOM/PUCRS also work together on the Journalism, Imaginary and Memory Network (JIM) survey.
International excellence in research
Receiving the title of Honoris Causa is also a joy for the University. For the Pro-Rector of Research and Graduate Studies at PUCRS Carlos Eduardo Lobo e Silva, the achievement is cause for celebration. “PUCRS receives the news of this well-deserved international recognition of the excellence of its teaching staff with great joy and pride. Professor Juremir Machado’s trajectory is an example of academic excellence that impacts society and transforms lives for the better. Awards of this magnitude reaffirm the strength not only of our research, but also of our teaching at all levels”, he emphasizes.
In addition to the link with the French university, PUCRS’ PPGCOM also maintains relationships with institutions in Portugal, the United States, and other countries. For Rosângela Florczak, professor, researcher and dean of Famecos, relationships with international universities help build research of great impact in the field of Communication.
“Having researchers recognized internationally is always relevant for an institution that is serious and committed to the production of knowledge in the area, such as Famecos is. In the case of Professor Juremir Machado, this privilege takes on special contours because his practices are different and establish new parameters for research. And they are not just technical and methodological parameters, but a reference of human attitudes and care for the area and people”, he celebrates.
