The average occupancy rate of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds by covid-19 in Brazil this Thursday (Jan 20) is 59%. In all, 14 states and the Federal District have the rate above 60% and two are on critical alert, that is, with occupancy above 80%. The information is from the website CoronavirusBot, which compiles data from state health departments.
In Goiás, the rate is 85.80%, according to the bulletin of the Secretary of Health of the state this Thursday (20.jan). There are 617 beds in total with 527 occupied, 70 available and 20 blocked. Pernambuco, the other state on critical alert, has a rate of 86.97% of ICU beds occupied by covid-19.
With the cooling of the pandemic, several states reduced the number of ICU beds because of the drop in hospitalizations. Thus, in addition to the two mentioned, another 13 units of the Federation present more than 60% occupancy. They are: Maranhão (61.59%), São Paulo (61.93%), Pará (63.32%), Ceará (63.8%), Roraima (66.67%), Piauí (66.9% ), Bahia (68.04%), Mato Grosso (68.59%), Federal District (69%), Tocantins (69.9%), Rio Grande do Norte (73.98%), Santa Catarina (74, 45%) and Espírito Santo (77.86%).
Fiocruz, in an epidemiological bulletin of January 17, also highlights the greater presence of younger ages, both in the number of hospitalizations and deaths. In hospitalizations, children up to 2 years old will gain prominence at the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022. For ICU admissions, there seems to be a new form of distribution, in which younger adults and older elderly people share the profile that most requires care intensive.
In the first two weeks of 2022, from January 2 to 15, there was an average of 130 daily deaths from Covid-19 in Brazil. Fiocruz points out that the vaccination campaign achieved positive results and demonstrated the effectiveness of immunizing agents, especially to reduce hospitalizations and deaths.
