The procedure was carried out in the early hours of this Friday, the 10th, by teams from Santa Casa and Hospital of Clinics with support from the Centenário surgical block. After confirming the brain death of a 39-year-old man, his kidneys, corneas and liver were removed and sent to a patient on the waiting list. For the lungs and heart, no compatible people were found.
The president of Centenary Hospital, Lilian Silva, reinforces the institution’s role in situations like this. “We understand that it is a decision that needs to be made by the family in a moment of extreme pain, the loss of a loved one. However, by mediating the organ donation process, the institution is fulfilling its role by allowing other lives to be saved”, she puts it.
The donor’s widow thanked the support received. “Even in this difficult time, my heart is light and grateful to have had the opportunity to save many lives. Thank you for everything you did for him, I know he was well taken care of by you.
This was the first capture of the year at the Centenary. In 2022, there were seven protocols and three captures. The institution annually conducts campaigns to encourage and raise awareness about organ donation. Last year, a walk on Independence Street was attended by health professionals who took information about the organ harvesting process carried out by the hospital.
Aspects of organ procurement for transplantation
Organ procurement for transplantation is the process by which organs are collected from donors and prepared to be transplanted into patients who need an organ to survive or improve their quality of life. Organ harvesting is carried out by specialized teams, usually composed of doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
A organ donation can be done in a number of ways, including donation after brain death (when the brain stops working but the heart is still beating), cardiac death donation (when the heart stops beating) or living donation (when the organ is donated by a person who is alive).
Organ harvesting is a complex and delicate process, which requires skill and care to ensure that the organs are adequately preserved and prepared for transplantation. In addition, it is important to respect local laws and regulations for organ donation and to keep the patient’s well-being in mind at all times.
