SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said on Thursday that Pfizer’s pediatric vaccine against Covid-19 has so far proven to be safe for use in children aged 5 to 11 years, contradicting frequent speeches by President Jair Bolsonaro who, without presenting data, casts doubt on the safety of the immunizer.

The minister’s statements were made during a ceremony at Guarulhos airport, in São Paulo, to receive the first batch of 1.248 million doses of pediatric vaccines against Covid, which will begin to be distributed to the States this Thursday.
“Of course, in every mass vaccination campaign there are adverse events related to the vaccine, and we have to speak frankly with the population. We are going to observe these adverse events, together with Anvisa itself, which is responsible for pharmacovigilance, and the pharmaceutical industry itself to make possible course corrections”, said Queiroga.
“But, despite being recent, these vaccines have been applied in the main health systems in the world, this application began in the month of November, especially in the United States, more than 8 million doses were applied in the United States to children aged 5 to 11 years and no major adverse events have been reported. Therefore, as far as we know at the moment, there is safety attested not only by Anvisa, but by other regulatory agencies, for the application of these vaccines.”
The minister said that by the end of March, Brazil will receive 20 million doses of Pfizer’s pediatric Covid-19 vaccine.
In a statement, Pfizer said that two more batches of vaccines for children should arrive in Brazil later this month, with another 1.248 million doses on the 20th and 1.818 million on the 27th.
The first batch of pediatric vaccines against Covid-19 arrived in Brazil this morning at Viracopos airport, in Campinas, and was later taken to Guarulhos, where the ministry’s distribution center is located and from where the doses will depart for the States.
