The Ministry of Health updated the number of cases of people with covid-19 who were infected with the omicron variant. According to the folder, 11 cases were identified across the country. Five are in the state of São Paulo, 2 in the Federal District, 2 in Rio Grande do Sul and 2 in the state of Goiás. In the note, the ministry also said that 3 notifications are under investigation: two in Goiás and one in Minas Gerais.
The World Health Organization has already classified the strain as a “concern variant”, as it has a greater transmission capacity. But, according to the WHO, although omicron can cause a higher rate of reinfection, the symptoms of the disease are milder.
In addition, the World Health Organization reinforced the importance of completing the vaccination schedule, in the case of two-dose immunizers or taking the single-dose vaccine as a way to protect against the new coronavirus. And also: if it is already available, take the third dose of the vaccine or booster.
Vaccine passport
The federal government even published an ordinance requiring the presentation of proof of vaccine and a negative test of covid-19 for entry to any person in the country. Anyone who did not present the document had to undergo a quarantine period of 5 days upon disembarking. The measure was postponed after the cyber attack on the Ministry of Health website and also on the ConnectSUS platform, which provides the certificate of vaccination against covid-19 for Brazilians.
While technicians are trying to normalize the systems, the federal government must issue an ordinance in the coming days with the changes required by the Supreme Court (STF). Minister Luis Roberto Barroso determined that proof of vaccination was mandatory for travelers arriving in the country. Only those who present medical reasons or who come from a country where there is no vaccine available or for exceptional humanitarian reasons will be exempt from presenting a passport.
Decision
For Minister Barroso, the daily entry of thousands of travelers into the country, the approach of the end of the year festivities, pre-carnival events and the carnival itself, capable of attracting large numbers of tourists, and the threat of promoting tourism antivacine, given the imprecision of the norms that require its proof, constitute an imminent risk.
In the decision, the magistrate also states that “negative test or a five-day quarantine for foreigners cannot replace the vaccine passport.” Barroso also recalled that the Court has a constitutional obligation to protect the fundamental rights to life and health and said that allowing the free choice between proof of vaccination and quarantine followed by a test creates a situation of absolute lack of control and the consequent ineffectiveness of the rule.
