Unraveling the mysteries of the human mind through Freud’s teachings is one of the objectives of the new and exclusive series “Para Ver Freud”, by Lyana Peck, which premieres on Curta! Based on the successful book collection “Para Ler Freud” organized by Nina Saroldi, presenter and production consultant, the work explores the main concepts created by the father of psychoanalysis.
A neurologist, Freud was a pioneer in the study of the mind and wrote several books detailing theories that explore the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious and the use of psychoanalysis – a method he created – as a treatment. Researchers and psychoanalysts participate in five 40-minute episodes: “The Interpretation of Dreams”, “Oedipus Complex”, “Compulsions and Obsessions”, “The Unconscious” and “Mass Psychology and Analysis of the Self”, analyzing and interpreting theories of Freud and connecting them with contemporary situations.
“We live in an eminently visual society. (…) Therefore, the series is a chance to present Freud’s work to the general public in a more accessible way. (…) It was an exquisite work and, with the direction of Lyana Peck and the script by Maria Ganem, we built a very different and quality series to talk about Freud’s work”, assures Nina Saroldi.
Dreams
The first episode, “The Interpretation of Dreams”, addresses the concept described in the book released by the psychoanalyst in 1900. Tania Rivera, Daniel Omar Perez, Christian Dunker and Rita Von Hunty explain the role of dreams in psychoanalysis and how Freud analyzed his dreams patients from their unconscious. “With the theory of dreams, Freud showed that the unconscious is there for everyone. We all have our own little private madness in this film that we create at night to deal with relational, psychic difficulties or our insufficiencies”, explains psychoanalyst Christian Dunker.
Current themes
More than 100 years later, mental health and its consequences are still a topic of widespread discussion in the midst of a globalized and increasingly connected world. The concept of psychoanalysis created by Freud has become essential for thinking and studying current issues. Art educator, drag queen and influencer Rita Von Hunty, comments on how the method created centuries ago permeates studies on gender, a much more recent discussion. “My curiosity with psychoanalysis is the result of a truncated process of being embedded in the thing, there is no way to be outside of it. In my area of cultural studies, queer theory, gender theory, critical studies, it is a guiding discourse for this other knowledge. (…) Our idea of academia, our idea of intellectuality, our greatest interpreters like Lelia Gonzales, are in dialogue with psychoanalysis”, she adds.
“Para Ver Freud” is a Giros production made possible by Curta! through the Audiovisual Sector Fund (FSA). The series can also be watched on CurtaOn – Clube de Documentários, available on Prime Video Channels, from Amazon, on Claro TV+ and on the platform’s official website with episodes being made available weekly. The exhibition is on the Quintas do Pensamento themed day, June 6th, at 11pm.
