THE SYMPATHIZER, an original HBO miniseries, premieres on Sunday, April 14, at 10pm, on HBO and Max. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name, by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the series stars Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan , Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong and Emmy® winner Sandra Oh, who join Oscar® winner Robert Downey Jr.
THE SYMPATHIZER is a series that follows the life of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the tumultuous final days of the Vietnam War. The plot follows his journey as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he discovers that his espionage past still haunts him.
Behind the cameras, a powerful team brings this production to life. Park Chan-wook and Don McKeller are co-showrunners and executive producers; Chan-wook also serves as writer and director for episodes 1 to 3, and McKeller serves as the series’ writer. Robert Downey Jr., in addition to starring, is also executive producer, alongside Susan Downey, Amanda Burre (Team Downey), Niv Fichman (Rhombus Media), Jisun Back (Moho Film), Kim Ly, and Ron Schmidt, executive producer and book author, Viet Thanh Nguyen.
The production also features the direction of Brazilian Fernando Meirelles (episode 4) and Marc Munden (episodes 5-7). The script is written by Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King and Tea Ho.
