The Minas Gerais Civil Police (PCMG) is investigating the death of a 60-year-old woman following a cosmetic procedure at a clinic in Belo Horizonte, on March 7th. Laudelina Gomes Machado lost her life during an intervention that promised to lift her buttocks with the insertion of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which is not recommended by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP).
According to information in the police report registered by the Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG), the woman’s procedure was scheduled for 9:30 am. The doctor responsible for the procedure told the police that he applied local anesthesia to the patient and subsequently injected the PMMA.
After the procedure, the woman stood up and said she was very sleepy. Then she fell to the floor, urinated and vomited. The clinical condition worsened, a cardiologist who was at the establishment was called and performed the resuscitation procedure. However, the patient did not resist.
The woman’s partner said that she had already had three other sessions with the doctor and that this was the fourth. Each one cost R$12,000. The couple found out about the clinic online and decided to schedule the procedures. According to him, the patient had no health problems and was only taking continuous blood pressure medication. The man also reported that his partner was very happy to undergo the aesthetic procedure.
According to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, PMMA is not recommended for aesthetic purposes, only for correction of small deformities. Among the complications that the product can cause, according to the entity, are nodules, masses and infectious inflammatory processes.
The report tries to contact the clinic, but has not yet received a response. The space remains open.
