The São Paulo government will distribute 300,000 units of specific repellents for pregnant women. There are now almost 215 thousand confirmed cases of dengue in the state. 44 cities in São Paulo have already declared a state of emergency.
The lack of repellent on the market has become a problem in many regions. The measure announced by the São Paulo government should serve around 50 thousand pregnant women.
“Municipalities can join this centralized purchase, purchasing inputs such as hydration serum, analgesic, antipyretic, and finally we announced a death investigation committee to speed up unconfirmed deaths”, says Priscilla Perdicaris, secretary of current health status.
Pregnant women are part of the risk group for dengue, chikungunya and zika. Pregnant women with dengue have a greater chance of needing hospitalization, especially if they contract the disease in the last three months of pregnancy.
“As pregnant women have much more blood, they have the potential to leak much more and have a much more serious condition. With accumulation of fluid in the lungs in the abdomen with potentially very worrying severity”, says Evelyn Traima, doctor at the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (FEBRASGO).
