In a memorable session at the Novo Hamburgo City Council, the Korndörfer Optics was honored for its 135 years of uninterrupted operation, a mark of resilience and tradition. The initiative, proposed by councilor Ricardo Ritter – Ica (PSDB), highlighted the company’s fundamental role in the city’s history and economic development.
A Korndörfer Optics, founded on February 19, 1889 by German immigrant Carlos Korndörfer, originally started as a factory and riding materials store on Rua Bento Gonçalves. Over the years, the company reinvented itself, introducing products imported from Germany, including prescription glasses, which would become the flagship of the business. Today, under the management of the fifth generation of the Korndörfer family, the company maintains its headquarters in the Canudos neighborhood and has expanded its presence with four additional branches, serving the community of Vale do Sinos and the North Coast.
The ceremony at the City Hall was attended by several councilors who expressed their respect and admiration for the Korndörfer Optics. Felipe Kuhn Braun (PP) highlighted the importance of the company for the economic future of Novo Hamburgo. Inspector Luz (MDB) highlighted the company’s social activities, emphasizing its commitment to the community. Enio Brizola (PT), sharing his experience as a customer of the Boa Saúde neighborhood unit, praised the company’s ability to remain competitive in a challenging market, offering high quality products and services.
Milton Souza, the current owner, took the stand to express his gratitude and pride. He recalled the trajectory of Korndörfer Optics, from its humble origins to becoming the oldest company in Rio Grande do Sul. With seven stores spread across the region, Milton Souza emphasized the company’s resilience, highlighting its growth even during unstable economic periods, such as the recent pandemic. At the end of his speech, he signaled the handover of management to the next generation, ensuring the continuity of the family’s legacy from the perspective.
This tribute from the Novo Hamburgo Chamber was not only a recognition of the longevity of the Korndörfer Optics, but also a tribute to their ongoing contribution to the local economy and community well-being. The celebration highlights the importance of traditional family businesses in building the history and shaping the character of a city, serving as an inspiring example for future generations of entrepreneurs.
