During the night of Wednesday, February 14, agents from the Ipson Pavani Environmental Defense Group, members of the São Leopoldo Municipal Civil Guard, faced an unusual challenge. They were mobilized to rescue two horses that, surprisingly, were wandering along Avenida Mauá towards the city center, using the route of Rua Lindolfo Collor. This unexpected situation created a risky scenario for both drivers and vehicles traveling through the area.
After being notified, civil guard professionals worked to capture the horses. However, the animals proved to be skittish and resisted the initial approach. They moved to the triangle area, close to Semusp. After continued efforts, one of the horses was finally captured, while the other persisted in escaping, leading to a brief chase through the city streets until it was safely rescued.
The horses were temporarily accommodated in the Train Museum, considered a safe place as it is a closed yard. There, they spent the night under the supervision of a guard agent. The following morning, Gestta, a company hired by the City of São Leopoldo to care for horses in situations of abuse or animal traction, was called.
The company operates on a rural property selected through a bidding process, with the cost of the animals being the responsibility of the municipal government. While awaiting adoption, the rescued horses remain in the company’s care. Those interested in adoption must present proof of having a suitable rural property, which offers the necessary conditions for the animal’s well-being.
