Starting this Wednesday, the 14th, the city of São Leopoldo will present a new configuration for its traditional camelódromo. The street trading center, previously located on João Neves da Fontoura Street, will now occupy a renovated space on the 24-hour street, located in Triângulo, between Saldanha da Gama and Lindolfo Collor streets, in the heart of the city.
This move comes after a series of negotiations and agreements between street vendors and the municipal administration, aiming for a smooth and efficient transition for everyone involved. The new Popular Shopping Center, which is now established in this new location, was made official by Law No. 6,473, replacing the old headquarters, which operated for 17 years at the intersection of Rua João Neves da Fontoura and Rua Primeiro de Março.
Eight traders, the last to occupy the old space, have already started to migrate to the new structure on the 24-hour street. Some of them have already started their commercial activities, while others are preparing to start in the next few days, awaiting final adjustments to the location’s infrastructure.
Changing the camelódromo
This relocation is part of a broader project by São Leopoldo City Hall, led by the Secretary of Economic, Tourism and Technological Development (Sedettec), Juliano Maciel. The inspection team and Maciel himself were present on Thursday, the 8th, to accompany traders in inspecting the new space and organizing the new stalls.
Maciel highlighted that the change was driven by a need for structural renovation in the central area, mainly due to the works at Independência. The new location was chosen after dialogue, involving both traders and entities representing local commerce. The expectation is that this new provision will offer better conditions for both sellers and consumers.
In addition to benefiting traders with a more strategic location, the old area on Rua João Neves da Fontoura will be converted into a new parking space in the blue zone, aiming to improve mobility and access in the central region of São Leopoldo.
