The City Hall of Itapuranga, a municipality located in the central region of Goiás, took the decision to cancel this year’s carnival schedule due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in the city. The measure was announced after the confirmation of 160 cases since the first day of January, according to information from the State Department of Health of Goiás (SES-GO), released this Friday (2).
The carnival program, which was scheduled to take place between the 9th and 11th of February 2024, was canceled in compliance with health protocols and in consideration of the safety, well-being and health of the population of Itapuranguense, as highlighted in an official note published on the networks social services by the city hall.
The city, with just over 26,100 inhabitants, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), recorded a case of Covid-19 that evolved with respiratory complications, leading to the need for hospitalization and resulting in the death of one elderly man with comorbidities (diabetes and cardiovascular disease), as reported by SES-GO.
“The decision respects the technical recommendations made by the Health Department team regarding the new wave of contamination that arrived in our city”, clarified the city hall, highlighting the importance of following the guidelines of the health authorities.
The cancellation of the carnival was decided after a meeting held on Thursday (1st) with the competent authorities of the municipality and in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Municipal Health Department (SMS).
The city hall had already been intensifying alerts to the population, recommending the use of masks, the practice of social distancing and providing information about the symptoms of Covid-19, aiming to help the community identify the disease early.
