A woman was admitted to a hospital in Pará for emergency surgery on her collarbone, and left without her uterus.
Rosangela Cavalcante, 42 years old, was taken to a health unit after suffering a motorcycle accident. She was taken to the Breves Regional Hospital, in the Marajó archipelago, where she was supposed to undergo surgery on her collarbone, but, upon leaving the operation, she was surprised by the news that her uterus had been removed.
“She asked the person next to her, the companion, if they really did the surgery, then they looked at it and said no. They went to look and she said she was feeling pain below. When they went to see, it was completely open”, says sister Rosenilda Cavalcante.
In a video recorded inside the hospital by family members, the doctor responsible for the surgery confirms the error: “there was a change of identification, Rosângela was identified as Maria, and she was sent to surgery, to my room, with Maria’s medical records , identified as Maria, and her uterus was removed. What I want you to understand, Rosângela, there will be no harm.”
Lawyer Renan Marinho, from the Pará Association Against Medical Error, disagrees with what the doctor claims: “she has the potential to be a mother. They took that right away from her. The patient will be entitled to compensation.”
After the medical error, the patient was taken again to the surgical suite at the same hospital and underwent clavicle surgery. Rosângela remains hospitalized.
“My sister is mentally shaken. She is crying a lot, she is in a lot of pain. She is a single mother, she has no income, she worked, and when this accident happened she stayed there. She is unable to do so, there is no one to support her son”, says Rosenilda.
When contacted, the Health Department of the state of Pará, which manages the hospital, did not respond.
