To avoid the worsening of diseases and the consequent overcrowding of the hospital, the São Leopoldo City Council’s strategy is to invest heavily in Primary Care in the neighborhoods. Therefore, Basic Health Units (UBSs) are the places where the population can seek care. UBSs are the gateway to the Unified Health System (SUS) and offer a series of services ranging from reception to consultations.
In São Leopoldo, most units provide service from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and from 1 pm to 4:30 pm. However, some UBS’s offer extended care. This is the case of UBS’ Cohab Feitoria and Vila Brás, which have service until 8 pm. The UBS’s Vicentina and Campina also work with extended hours, until 6:30 pm.
These Units offer long-term care due to work demand, as explained by administrative coordinator, Rose Muller. “Due to the number of patients in the area described being very large, in order to provide better care for the population, during extended hours, we serve patients from all over the city.”
Giceli Lopes, coordinator of UBS Vicentina agrees. “The opening hours are extended to serve all audiences, including patients who have difficult access due to working hours”, she highlights.
The UBS’s in São Leopoldo are equipped to serve the entire population in the best possible way, offering various health professionals, such as: doctors, nurses, nursing technicians, dentists, psychologists and other professionals.
