Porto Alegre kicks off Carnival 2024 this Friday (26) with the traditional Descida da Borges. The event starts at 8pm with the carnival parade in the Historic Center. Due to the revitalization works of the Central Quadrilátero, the parade will start at Borges de Medeiros, near José Montaury Street, and will continue to Siqueira Campos Avenue, in front of the Public Market.
“We are organizing it with the samba school leagues in our city and we want to put on a beautiful event aimed at the people who love carnival”, says the president of the Executive Committee of Carnival 2024 in Porto Alegre, Liliana Cardoso. In this edition, there will be 250 meters of parade instead of the 150 meters covered in previous years. In 2023, there was no parade, just a stage set up in front of Largo Glênio Peres.
According to the Municipal Department of Culture, the champion schools of Carnival 2023 will perform: Estado Maior da Restinga (Gold Series); Copacabana (Silver Series) and Comanches (Oldest Tribe).
At the opening of the event, Mayor Sebastião Melo will hand over the key to the city to the Carnival Court, made up of King Momo Pablo Gawlinski, Japa; Queen Evelyn Pereira and princesses Janaina Pereira and Nicoly Gonçalves.
