The storm that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the city of São Leopoldo on Tuesday night (16) and early Wednesday morning (17) resulted in localized flooding on several avenues and streets in the city. Due to intense winds and rain, many trees fell and power supply was interrupted, blocking roads and affecting several areas. The total accumulated rain was 37mm, with a peak of 20mm in less than 30 minutes at 11:45 pm. The teams were on duty throughout the night. There were no reports of injuries, displacement or displacement.
Civil Defense and teams from the Departments of Mobility and Urban Services, Works and Traffic, Semae and Subprefectures continue working to remove trees and clean public roads. As of Wednesday morning, more than 20 tree falls were recorded on public roads, squares, residences and electricity networks, and teams are still on the streets responding to calls.
Civil Defense has already provided five tarpaulins to families whose homes were blown away by the wind. RGE teams are working to restore electricity. One of the affected neighborhoods is Cohab Duque, where the Semae reservoir is without power, causing a lack of water.
According to RGE, there is a lack of electricity in the Campestre, Vila Brás, Santos Dumont and Pinheiro neighborhoods. As a result, the Basic Health Units (UBSs) in these locations are only treating emergency cases.
On Lacy Pereira Figueiredo Street, in the Santa Tereza neighborhood, two trees that fell on the road were removed and traffic has now been reopened. On Estrada do Morro do Paula, around 5 trees fell. Other tree falls occurred at the Cristo Rei Cemetery, on Rua da Saudade, also in the Cristo Rei neighborhood, and at Praça Amadeo Rossi, on Avenida João Corrêa.
Inspection in Pump Houses
On Wednesday morning (17), the general director of the Municipal Water and Sewage Service (Semae), Geison Freitas, the General Secretary of Government, Nelson Spolaor, the director of Flood Control, Antônio Geske, and the manager of Semae Sewer Maintenance and Macrodrainage, Josnei Barcelos, inspected the Pump Houses in the Vicentina and Campina neighborhoods. The five Pump Houses operated normally, but a large accumulation of domestic waste and tree pruning was identified. The city hall’s continuous actions in cleaning the streams and drainage channels helped with the work.
