In the film Maternal Instinct, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain play two friends, whose friendship will be put to the test after a tragic accident involving the son of one of them. Set in the 1960s, the film marks the directorial debut of award-winning cinematographer Benoît Delhomme (The Theory of Everything, The Offenders, No Portal da Eternidade) and hits Brazilian cinemas on March 21st.
Based on the book of the same name by Barbara Abel, the film follows the lives of these two neighbors who have their perfect lives shaken by a tragedy, which transforms not only their friendship, but also their families, forever. The narrative, originally set in Belgium in the book, was transferred to the United States in the 1960s, a period of revolution and social transformation. Chastain, who, like Hathaway, is also a producer, says that the plot delves into the social roles of women and men that were changing at that time.
Visually, Maternal Instinct recalls the glamorous golden age of suspense and director Delhomme was delighted at the opportunity to bring a bit of this period back. “I love films from the 60s and, visually, I feel very attracted to that period. And even though I wasn’t born in the United States, I felt like I could convey that in a new way. I didn’t want everything to be shot in the shadows just because it’s a thriller.”
