The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) is carrying out a survey to find out doctors’ opinions on the mandatory vaccination against Covid-19 for children aged 6 months to 4 years and 11 months.
In 2024, the Ministry of Health chose to change the vaccination schedule against Covid-19. Among the changes is the inclusion of the vaccine against the disease in the National Vaccination Calendar, for children aged six months to four years and 11 months.
With the new standard, the CFM decided to listen to doctors’ opinions on the matter. In total, there are four questions. CNN had access to the form, check it out below:
After the survey was released, the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm) took a stance against the CFM survey in a statement released this Thursday (11).
“SBIm understands that the research carried out by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) will not bring any benefit to society, since — by equating personal beliefs with science — it can generate insecurity in the medical community and keep the population away from vaccination rooms”, informs SBIm, in a note.
According to SBIm, “vaccination against Covid-19 is a proven effective and safe strategy for preventing the disease, which is potentially fatal in all age groups, including children”.
In 2022, Brazil recorded one death per day of children with Covid-19 between six months and five years old. The data was released by Observa Infância, a project that brings together researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and Unifase.
In 2023, 5,310 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and 135 deaths were recorded among children under 5 years of age in Brazil, according to the latest epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health, which gathers data until November.
According to SBIm, “vaccinating children against Covid-19 is effective. A study that analyzed almost 4% of the pediatric population in the United States during the waves of the Delta and Omicron variants demonstrated that vaccination was 74.3% effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection, 75.5% against moderate or serious and 84.9% against episodes that require ICU admission”.
