A girl, just 8 years old, died after suffering a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) this past Monday (08). Maria Julia de Camargo Adriano was a resident of Ribeirão do Pinhal, a municipality in Paraná, and had been admitted to the University Hospital (HU) of Londrina since last Saturday (06), after feeling severe headaches and fainting.
To CNN, Maria Julia’s aunt, Adriana Silva, reported that the girl was playing on Saturday morning (6) at home, when she lay down in a hammock complaining to her parents about severe headaches. Soon after, she passed out. The frightened father and mother quickly took the girl to the city hospital.
In the emergency unit, due to the child’s condition being serious, the doctors chose to transfer her to Bandeirantes Hospital, where a tomography carried out in the unit found that the girl had suffered a serious brain injury.
After the test results, Julia was transferred again, this time to the University Hospital (HU) of Londrina. There, she was hospitalized for two days in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU).
According to the aunt, several tests were carried out on Julia, but the girl did not show any improvement. This Monday (08), Maria Julia could not resist and suffered brain death. The hospital confirmed the child’s death.
Maria Julia, who was an only child, was enjoying her school holidays. For her aunt, she will be greatly missed by family and friends in the city:
“She was a very happy, happy, intelligent child. The whole city is very moved by her loss,” the aunt told CNN. Julia was laid to rest on Monday (08) and buried this Tuesday (9), at 11 am, at the Ribeirão do Pinhal Municipal Cemetery.
The case is rare in children. According to a study by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, a stroke in pediatric patients can reach up to 13 in a universe of 100 thousand children.
