In 2023, Hugo Cantergiani Airport, now under city management following the transfer of the terminal from the State Government to Caxias do Sul City Hall on April 28, presented impressive results. Comparing with 2022 data, there was a substantial increase in passenger flow at the airport in 2023. The terminal counted 334,318 passengers last year, compared to 221,449 in 2022, setting a new record for passenger movement at the terminal.
Currently, the terminal operates flights from Azul, Gol and Latam airlines, with routes to the airports of Viracopos in Campinas, Congonhas and Guarulhos in São Paulo, Galeão in Rio de Janeiro and Hercílio Luz in Florianópolis.
According to Maurício D’Ávila, director of the Caxias terminal, the record number of passengers is the result of a combination of factors. “The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) recorded the best rates in the history of domestic aviation in August 2023, with more than 8.2 million passengers, an increase of 12% compared to August 2022. In Caxias, the numbers followed the same trend. We had the biggest flow in August, with 34,624 people at the airport. We observed a significant increase in passengers in the post-pandemic period, with a focus on tourism. Airlines also contributed, offering new flight options during the holidays, from Caxias do Sul to Rio de Janeiro. The Federal Government’s fiscal incentive policies and the resumption of regional civil aviation also helped to improve the year’s performance”, he highlighted.
In addition to commercial flights, Hugo Cantergiani Airport also serves as a landing point for private planes, jets and charter flights, which include medical and organ transport, athlete delegations and visits from authorities.
