The crowdfunding campaign to help Pedro, son of indigenous farmer Bruno Pereira, reached the target of R$2 million this Sunday (7/1). The boy is 5 years old and faces stage 4 neuroblastoma — childhood cancer that grows in parts of the nervous system.
All the money raised will be used to treat Pedro, who needs an expensive, imported medicine that is not available in the Unified Health System (SUS). He has already had chemotherapy for five months.
“The amounts raised by the #SalvePedro campaign will be fully allocated to his cancer treatment. With Pedrinho cured, any remaining amount will be allocated to families who need the medicine, to the Hospital da Criança de Brasília/DF (or another institution), so that other children can have the same opportunity that Pedro is receiving”, says the campaign .
The campaign was widely publicized on social media since January 4th. The effort received support from journalists, indigenous entities and politicians, such as minister Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples), federal deputy Duda Salabert (PDT-MG) and state deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT-SP).
Bruno Pereira
Indigenist Bruno Pereira worked in communities in the Amazon and was killed in 2022, along with English journalist Dom Phillips. They disappeared in Vale do Javari and, days later, authorities found their bodies.
Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, known as Pelado, confessed to involvement in the crime, along with his brother Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, known as Dos Santos.
Federal Police investigation indicates that the brothers shot Bruno and Dom to death, then burned the bodies and buried them. The victims had a disagreement with illegal fishermen in the region, the second largest indigenous territory in the country.
