The exhibition “Synchretism”, by French artist Louis Guillaume, will open on January 25th, at 6pm, in the Sala Aldo Locatelli of the Paço Municipal de Porto Alegre. The exhibition presents a set of works that explore the relationship between painting and sculpture, using natural elements found on the coast of Guaíba and in the city of Mostardas.
Guillaume, 28 years old, lives and works in La Rochelle, France. Graduated in Fine Arts from the École Européene Supérieure d’Art de Bretagne (EESAB-Rennes), the artist’s practice is linked to nature and the seasons. In 2022, he won the Mondes Nouveaux Prize, offered by the French Ministry of Culture.
For the artistic residency in Porto Alegre, Guillaume spent 45 days staying in the home-studio of the painter Iberê Camargo. During this period, he worked under the guidance of the artist Eduardo Haesbaert, who was Iberê’s printer.
“Thanks to the work at the Iberê Foundation Engraving Studio, alongside Eduardo Haesbaert, I was finally able to overcome the relationship of intention and representation with drawing to a more physical approach, in which the body is involved – taking the work inevitably to abstraction”, says the artist.
Guillaume describes his works as “tanned skins” that reveal the fragility and peeling of paper, its uniqueness and vitality. “The sheets of paper knew the rain, the sun, the fire, as if they were the experiences of a lifetime or, perhaps, of their origins reconstituted,” he says.
The “Synchretismo” exhibition is an opportunity to discover the work of a promising artist who is exploring new possibilities of artistic expression. Guillaume’s works are an invitation to reflect on the relationship between man and nature.
