A report from the Ministry of Health, released this Wednesday, 27th, showed that Brazil broke a record for deaths from dengue in 2023. In total, there were 1,079 deaths from the disease, according to the Notifiable Diseases Information System ( Sinan).
According to the historical series released by the department, the highest number of deaths had been recorded in 2022, when it reached 1,053 records. Then comes 2015, with 986 deaths.
“The time is to intensify efforts and prevention measures by everyone to reduce the transmission of diseases. To avoid the worsening of cases, the population should seek the nearest health service when they present the first symptoms”, said the ministry in a note.
How will the dengue vaccine be distributed?
Also according to the Ministry of Health, last Thursday, the 21st, the vaccine against dengue was incorporated into the Unified Health System (SUS). However, it will not be used on a large scale at first, as the manufacturing laboratory, Takeda, has restricted supply capacity.
The Ministry informed that the vaccination of this first batch will be focused on priority regions and audiences, scheduled to take place in the first weeks of January.
The Japanese company Takeda Pharma, manufacturer of the Qdenga vaccine, submitted the demand for evaluation of the technology. According to data evaluated by the commission, the vaccine was 84% effective in reducing hospitalization in cases of dengue fever.
The World Health Organization (WHO) started recommending the dengue vaccine in October this year. The decision was based on analysis by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE).
