A nurse reported a Carrefour pharmacy in Osasco (SP) for having sold her a blood glucose test with a needle already used by another customer. The nurse came into contact with the needle after being given incorrect advice by the Carrefour pharmacist. When she opened the box, she saw that the device was without a needle and that they were in a small sealed plastic bag with ten units. When reporting the problem to the manager, he confirmed that the device and, consequently, the needle, were actually used as a test on another customer, who did not want to take the meter.
The client also reported in the police report that she had to start treatment to prevent HIV and Hepatitis B due to blood contact with the needle used by another person. The disease prevention cocktail made her interrupt her in vitro fertilization treatment, which, according to her, cost around R$20,000.
In the column, the nurse said that, according to her doctors, she will only be able to resume treatment to get pregnant in six months, when her body will be free from HIV and Hepatitis B prevention medicines. diseases or not.
However, her contract with the IVF treatment clinic is valid until June 2024, a month before she is expected to be allowed to freeze her eggs.
In the video in which the manager admitted the error, he said that Carrefour will support her in the medical treatments she will have to undergo due to blood exposure.
The nurse, however, points out that they have not committed to covering the costs of their family planning with in vitro fertilization, which will be lost.
When contacted, Carrefour acknowledged the error, but minimized the episode by citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) that says there is only a 2% chance of contamination. The company also reported that the pharmacist responsible for selling the violated device was dismissed from the pharmacy and that it is offering medical and psychological support to the victim and her husband. The victim, however, denied the medical care offered by Carrefour on the advice of her lawyer, who advised her to continue seeing her trusted doctor.

“After becoming aware of what happened, we acted immediately to offer all the necessary care to the client. It is absolutely unacceptable for a situation like this to occur and, as a consequence, we have terminated the pharmaceutical company that acted against all function protocols, selling the violated device.
We offer medical and psychological support to the client to face any risk of contamination, which, according to the World Health Organization, can occur in 2% of cases occurring in these circumstances.
