On Saturday, December 16, São Leopoldo City Hall opened the Pet Space at Praça da Biblioteca, in the city center. The space is intended for domestic animals and has an area of 600 square meters, with toys, drinking fountains and benches for owners.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Animal Protection (Sempa), Walter Leo Verbist.
“These are small gestures and ideas that emerge, which turn into help for animal welfare”, highlighted Verbist.
The construction of Espaço Pet was a partnership between the departments of Animal Protection, Urban Service (Semurb) and the Municipal Water and Sewage Service (Semae).

“This is yet another moment that consolidates the partnership relationship between the municipal administration and the water authority, Semae”, reinforced the Secretary of Economic, Tourism and Technological Development, Juliano Maciel.
Animals can use the space to run and play, free from the leash. However, there are rules and precautions that must be respected, such as not leaving the animal unattended, collecting the physiological waste left by them and following the recommendations found on the sign in front of the space’s gate.
Nathalia Rocha, guardian of 2-year-old Lola, shared the joy of having an environment conducive to leisure for pets.
“We live in an apartment, so having a place where she can run and vent is very important. We look forward to more spaces like this throughout the city.”
Also present was the representative of Semae, Maurício Miorim; the president of the Municipal Animal Protection Council, Daniel Ferraz Dias and some animal protection NGOs.
São Leopoldo City Hall plans to build more spaces like this in other regions of the city.
