Campo Bom registered the mark of 96,000kg of glass collected at 14 Voluntary Delivery Points (PEV) destined for the exclusive collection of glass, the amount collected between the months of February to November 2023 was destined for Verallia and returns to the production chain as raw material for new packaging. Given the success of the Program, starting this month the city will have 12 new containers totaling 26 new pieces of equipment that are spread across public places, at strategic points for disposal.
For Quintin Testa, general director of Verallia for Latin America, the milestone achieved in the city is the result of work to raise awareness among the population regarding conscious consumption and disposal.
To date, 3,000,000 kg of glass have been recovered throughout Brazil in the areas involved with the Program. The target established for 2023 of installing 500 PEVs was exceeded by the Program, with 655 points currently installed. And, with the aim of extending it to new regions of Brazil, the focus will be on densely populated areas, where sustainable logistics are viable and promising.
Increased glass recycling
Today, it is estimated by the industry that 75% of glass consumed ends up in landfills and only 25% is recycled. In addition to the accumulation of waste, materials destined for landfills have a cost for city halls and therefore for citizens.
To recycle, the glass does not need to be intact. Just by using shards in the production of new packaging, it is possible to reduce energy consumption, extraction of natural resources and CO2 emissions.
To give you an idea, for every 10% of shard used in production, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 5% and energy consumption in the manufacturing process can be reduced by 2.5%.
