Text was approved by the Communication Committee of the Chamber of Deputies
Last Wednesday (29), the Communication Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved the report on bill 3415/2019, which aims to increase penalties for the sale of abortion medications in Brazil.
Authored by deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR), the text talks about including the application of a fine ten times greater than the legal minimum for those who advertise prohibited medicines that cause abortion.
In this project, which was reported by Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), other texts were added, such as PL 1004/2023, by Hélio Lopes (PL-RJ), which aims to prohibit the sale of misoprostol over the internet, in order to prevent the medicine from being sold without a prescription by pro-abortion pages.
The text’s rapporteur voted in favor of its approval, along with other projects of the same content, with the aim of reducing and preventing the sale of drugs capable of interrupting pregnancy.
– This reality justifies the measures to tighten the criminal legislation that typifies such conduct, as proposed in the projects in question. Therefore, from the perspective of the competences of this Communication Committee, we have no obstacle to the approval of such changes – says the rapporteur
Nikolas cites in his report an operation by the São Paulo Public Ministry that managed to dismantle a gang that sold such products. The Federal Public Ministry also took action against gangs like this, taking down more than 100 profiles on social networks that sold medicines illegally to induce women to have abortions.
The report was approved by the members of the Communication Committee and, now, the text must go to other committees until it is voted on in the Chamber plenary. If approved, it must still be discussed in the Federal Senate.
