Cinemateca Itália, in Porto Alegre, presents the Buñuel exhibition in Mexico between November 28th and December 8th. Ten films from Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s Mexican phase will be shown.
The opening session, next Tuesday (28), at 7:30 pm, shows one of Luis Buñuel’s greatest masterpieces, The Exterminating Angel, with a presentation by film critic Marcus Mello.
The program also highlights other notable works in the history of cinema, such as Os Esquecidos, Nazarín, Simão do Deserto and O Alucinado, with a section that ranges between stories of a social nature and openly surrealist narratives.
Mexico
One of the great creators of the cinematic avant-garde of the silent period, Buñuel went into exile from Spain during the Civil War (1936-39). From the 1940s onwards, he lived in Mexico, where he began the most productive phase of his cinematic career. “Between 1946 and 1964, from Gran Casino to Simón del Desierto, he made 20 films in Mexico (out of a total of 32). With the exception of Robinson Crusoe and The Young One, all of these films were shot in Spanish with Mexican actors and technicians,” declared the filmmaker.
With support from Versátil Filmes, the program has free entry.
