Instituto Ling, in Porto Alegre, will host a free piano workshop taught by one of the biggest attractions at this year’s Poa Jazz Festival: the duo formed by Congolese Ray Lema and Frenchman Laurent de Wilde. The activity takes place this Thursday, November 23rd, at 2pm, and is aimed at music professionals and students, but with access also to the general public. To participate, simply register in advance and at no cost at this site.
The workshop, held in partnership with Branco Produções and Grezz, is part of the Poa Jazz Festival program, which takes place from November 24th to 26th, at the BarraShoppingSul Events Center. During the workshop, pianists will share insights into how to translate African rhythms to the piano and combine them with jazz harmony. They will also discuss how to approach polyrhythms in a duo context and point out where to find inspiring material for repertoire across a wide variety of cultures, including the Caribbean, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East. The activity will be conducted in French or English, with translation available into Portuguese.
The 8th Poa Jazz Festival will bring together international, national and local attractions in nine shows on the 24th, 25th and 26th of November, at the BarraShoppingSul Events Center.
