O Festival do Xis, an event that celebrates Santa Maria’s most beloved snack, began with great success on Friday (17) in Vila Belga. Approximately 4,000 people gathered to taste different variations of xis, with the party continuing throughout the weekend.
The event, which took place on Rua Dr. Wauthier, was attended by 10 snack bars, 5 food trucks, beer bars and live performances by the bands Super Nes and Dona Flor. Vice-mayor Rodrigo Decimo, who was present, praised the structure of the event and invited everyone to participate.
Friday night saw a huge crowd, with all the eateries full of orders. The president of the Association of Hotels, Restaurants, Travel and Tourism Agencies (Ahturr), Emerson Nereu, expressed his satisfaction with the event, which exceeded expectations, despite the unstable weather.
Santa Maria is known as the Capital of Xis, and the festival offered visitors the chance to try different versions of the snack. Participating restaurants served the cheese in a smaller size than usual, allowing visitors to try several options. Until Sunday, there will be a popular vote to decide the “Best service”, the “tastiest cheese” and the “most creative cheese”.
Dentist Bruna Ribeiro, 24 years old, from Ijuí, says that she found out about the event through the City Hall’s social media, when musician Lucas Lima, from Família Lima, performed at the 80th Medianeira State Pilgrimage and recorded a video praising the xis santa. marian:
“I saw the post on Instagram and as I always come to Santa Maria for my postgraduate studies, I took the opportunity to stop by the festival. The cheese here is the best, I always order it.”
