The Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bruno Kiefer (1923 – 1987) this Friday, November 10th, at 8pm. On this occasion, in a new schedule at Casa da OSPA, the Orchestra presents an entirely national repertoire conducted by Cláudio Ribeiro and with solos by pianist Ney Fialkow. In addition to three works by Bruno Kiefer, the program is complemented by Lindembergue Cardoso and José Siqueira.
Born in Baden-Baden, Germany, and living in Brazil since he was 11 years old, Bruno Kiefer (1923 – 1987) was one of the founders of the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, alongside other musicians who left an important artistic legacy in the Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil. Professor Francisco Marshall, who teaches this Friday’s Concert Notes project, highlights that Bruno “was an admirable master, an avant-garde creator who promoted beautiful advances in the musical language in our community”. Francisco’s comments on the program can be seen in person, at 7pm, in the Recitals Room. Both the lecture and the concert will be broadcast live on OSPA’s YouTube, starting at 7pm and 8pm, respectively.
Bruno Kiefer signed more than 150 compositions, including “Divertimento nº 1 for Orchestra”, “Convertimento para Orquestra” and “Diálogo para Piano e Orquestra”, highlights of this Friday’s repertoire. According to pianist Ney Fialkow, who already recorded “Diálogo” with OSPA in 1998 and presents this gem with the Symphony once again, revisiting the work is “also celebrating the memory of a man committed to his time and his adopted land, Brazil”.
Conducted by Cláudio Ribeiro, who was artistic director and conductor of OSPA between 1995 and 1998, and currently coordinates the group Oficina de Ópera, in Porto Alegre, the Orchestra returns after the break to perform “Rapsódia Baiana”, by Lindembergue Cardoso (1939 – 1989), a great composer from the state of Bahia, whose work spans concert, popular, religious, opera and theater music. The concert ends with “Sinfonia nº 5, ‘Indígena’”, by José Siqueira (1907 – 1985), notable composer and creator of several Brazilian music and art institutes, such as the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the Recife Symphony Orchestra and the Order of Musicians of Brazil.
