The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) suspended advertising and dissemination of the dietary fiber supplement Xô Xuca, which combats constipation. The determination was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) this Tuesday (10/24).
Anvisa considered that the product’s advertisements were misleading, as they claimed that Xô Xuca replaces “chuca” and that it is effective in treating serious diseases, such as bowel cancer and diverticulitis.
“Chuca” is an intestinal cleansing technique that can be harmful to health, as it can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and even infections.
Xô Xuca is a food supplement composed of psyllium, chia and linseed. These dietary fibers help with intestinal function, but are not effective in treating serious illnesses.
Anvisa informed that the product can continue to be manufactured and sold, but without advertisements.
