The Santa Maria Air Base (Basm), with the support of the City Hall, received 13 thousand people at Expoaer 2023, held during the morning and afternoon of Saturday (14). The traditional aeronautical event – which was resumed after four years – celebrated the 150th birthday of the Father of Aviation, Santos Dumont, and welcomed the Air Demonstration Squadron (EDA), popularly known as the Fumaça Squadron.
“Expoaer is an event for the family, and that’s really cool. Everyone here can see our Brazilian Air Force showing this demonstration of welcome, love and affection. The Smoke Squadron is always an absolute success. It goes beyond being an acrobatic performance. It is a spectacle that inspires us, because each of these skilled pilots shows, together, their resilience, motivation, courage and determination. This is what we came here to applaud. Many thanks to the Brazilian Air Force, the Santa Maria Air Base and the Basm commander, Colonel Marchiorato”, said Mayor Jorge Pozzobom during the event.
According to the commander of Basm, aviator colonel Luciano Antonio Marchiorato Dobignies, Expoaer 2023 is a large event, with a lot of aircraft availability and made for the population. In each edition, the military organization seeks to get closer to society, presenting how the FAB works and what it is for, as well as how entry and training takes place for aviation enthusiasts or anyone interested in pursuing a military career. This edition, which had the support of the City Hall, marks the resumption of the event after the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I have, together with City Hall, a great partner. Not only at Expoaer, but on many occasions. We have fulfilled demands, meeting needs, and the City Hall has always supported us. Here, today, the City Hall helped to form this entire event, and without it we would not have been able to do it. We can appreciate a helicopter performing a rescue role, and it is part of a public security system that the City Hall tries to make viable for society in cases of need. What we saw at the Kiss nightclub, in Rio Taquari, and in other calamities in which we worked. It’s a set, a unique system that we try to transform and, mainly, bring to society so that they understand that the State itself is unique and is here to serve the people”, said the commander.
SCHEDULE
Basm’s gates opened at 10am, and those who went there had the opportunity to see up close the aircraft, Brazilian Army combat vehicles, trained dog shows and aerial model aircraft demonstrations. Approximately 3 tons of non-perishable food were collected, which will be destined for Sesc’s Mesa Brasil project.
“This great event that hadn’t happened for many years, and was resumed today, shows, through the large audience, the importance of the Santa Maria Air Base in the context of our city. This all moves our city, as has already been happening with several other types of cultural and sporting events, and this event, which is linked to our Armed Forces. We were very happy! We have always been able to count on our very valuable Air Base. And the Brazilian Air Force knows that it can always count on the City Hall, which was a great partner in this event”, declared vice-mayor Rodrigo Decimo.
The surprises were due to the low passes of the AMX A-1 fighters, F-5EM Tiger II, the prominent C-130 Hercules freighter, and the H-60 Black Hawk helicopter – among several other aircraft that remained on the ground for display. The highlight of the day were the incredible maneuvers of the Esquadrilha da Fumaça, which, with seven A-29 Super Tucano, performed a true spectacle that had not been seen in the skies of Santa Maria since 2017. The group, which is based at the Academia da Força Aérea (AFA), in Pirassununga (SP), has already carried out more than 4 thousand demonstrations in Brazil and in more than 20 countries.
IMMUNIZATION
Expoaer 2023 also marked the first day of the National Multivaccination Campaign. Under the coordination of the Secretariat of Economic Development and Tourism, the City of Santa Maria provided a stand where agents from the Immunization Sector of the Secretariat of Health administered 128 doses of flu vaccines (general population), bivalent against Covid-19 ( delayed first, second and third doses, for children and adults), and other routine immunizations. According to the Superintendent of Tourism at the Secretariat of Economic Development and Tourism, Ana Júlia Scortegagna Socal, other spaces set up by the City Hall played an important role during the event:
“The City Hall is supporting and participating in Expoaer, which is an event already consolidated in the city’s calendar of events and which provides an important approach and interaction between people and the Brazilian Air Force. We brought the Municipal Guard here, and, as the Secretariat of Economic Development and Tourism, we set up a stand with materials for distribution about Santa Maria Airport and tourism in the city. We also had a space with activities for children. It was a really cool event, on a very pleasant day with lots of attractions,”
Expoaer is carried out by the Brazilian Air Force, through the Santa Maria Air Base, and has the institutional support of the City of Santa Maria, the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), 3rd Army Division, Federal Highway Police, Military Brigade, Military Fire Brigade and Commercial Social Service.
