Opening of the Algerian Market – Algeria, a country with a population of 44 million, has just opened its market for Brazilian halal chicken meat. The news was announced by the Brazilian Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock and Foreign Affairs, and was received with enthusiasm by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA).
Local Demand and Brazilian Strategy
Algeria produces 340 thousand tons of chicken meat annually, which results in a per capita consumption of around 7 kilos per year. “Our strategy will be to complement local demand for products”, says Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA. “Brazil has solid know-how in Halal chicken meat exports and is ready to meet the demands of this market.”
Brazil: World Leader in Halal Exports
Brazil is not only a world leader in exports in the sector, but also the world’s largest exporter of halal chicken meat. Around 2 million tons are shipped annually, mainly to nations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and even Muslim consumers in Europe.
Future Opportunities
Luís Rua, markets director at ABPA, sees this opening as a window of opportunity for Brazilian exporters. “In fact, we plan to carry out a promotional event in Algeria next week”, he reveals.
