Brazil in the lead – Brazil has called and will chair a meeting of the UN Security Council this Friday in New York. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, will lead the meeting.
Focus on the humanitarian crisis
The meeting, which will begin at 10 am (local time), will focus on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, threats to security and world peace and the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East.
Appeal to the international community
On Wednesday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva appealed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the international community to defend Palestinian and Israeli children affected by the conflict.
Rotating Presidency of Brazil
Brazil assumed the rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council in October. The country occupies one of the Council’s 10 vacancies for non-permanent members, with a mandate that extends until the end of this year. Furthermore, Brazil is one of the largest participants among the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, second only to Japan.
