The issue was also associated with religious issues and racism, since, in the past, marijuana was associated with enslaved people.
The regulation of the use of Cannabis for medicinal purposes was the topic of the Participatory Legislation Committee of the Chamber of Deputies at the request of Congresswoman Talíria Petrone (PSOL-RJ). The event was attended by politicians and authorities in favor of the medicinal use of marijuana.
In the Senate, Bill (PL) 89/23 is being processed, which establishes the policy of free provision of medicines with cannabidiol by the Unified Health System (SUS). In the Chamber, PL 399/15 is being processed, which makes it possible to sell medicines that contain Cannabis sativa in their formulation.
One of the guests to debate the topic was state deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT-SP), who took advantage of the event to inform that, at the end of last year, he was diagnosed with mild Parkinson’s disease and that he uses medicinal Cannabis.
– I had a little tremor in my hands, muscle pain in my left leg. In addition to the conventional medication I took, I have been treating myself with medicinal Cannabis since February this year and I can say: I am feeling very good and active. Cannabis brings a better quality of life for everyone – said Suplicy.
According to the deputy, Cannabis is causing “a revolution in medicine comparable to the discovery of penicillin in 1928”. He added that the plant can be considered the medicine of the 21st century.
– The impact of Cannabis on human health is only comparable to the impact of penicillin, due to its ability to combat bacteria and its effectiveness in combating various diseases – he stated.
– It is important that we combat the stigma against Cannabis because it promotes quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s, anxiety, arthritis, glaucoma, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, depression, schizophrenia, endometriosis, epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, Parkinson’s, in addition to autism spectrum diseases, among many others. It is essential to guarantee everyone access to Cannabis, thus providing access to health – added Suplicy, lamenting that the use of the plant still does not benefit everyone, since a bottle of cannabidiol can cost up to R$1,200.
