The Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) welcomes two international guests for the show “Sinfonia Italiana”, which takes place this Saturday, September 23rd, at 5pm, at Casa da OSPA.
Spanish conductor Manuel Coves, with extensive experience as a conductor of concerts, operas and ballets in Europe and South America, arrives in Porto Alegre to conduct the Orchestra. The young and award-winning Hungarian pianist Valentin Magyar performs the solos from “Concerto No. 1 for Piano”, by Franz Liszt.
The opening of the opera “The Force of Destiny”, by the Italian Giuseppe Verdi (1813 – 1901), begins the show. Although the play premiered in 1862, in Russia, its definitive introduction would only be presented seven years later. Verdi wove several musical themes from the opera into his prelude.
Before the show, at 4pm, Milton gives a lecture from the Concert Notes series in the Recitais Room of the OSPA House, detailing the repertoire of “Sinfonia Italiana” and the lives of the three composers featured in the concert.
The composition that gives the show its name is one of the most festive by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847). Most of “Symphony No. 4 in A Major, ‘Italiana’” was written during the artist’s time in Italy. By experiencing the climate, architecture, dances and natural beauty wherever he visited, the German tried to channel all of these experiences into this symphony. However, after its premiere, the work was withdrawn from circulation for revisions, and Mendelssohn died before being able to finish it.
The definitive version of the “Italian Symphony” was published four years after his death, and the “saltarello” of the last movement – a typical Italian dance, in which couples dance hand in hand, making small jumps – is perhaps the most direct reference to the country honored. by the composer. Conducted by Manuel Coves, OSPA performs the original version of this work, which premiered in 1833.
