São Paulo – State deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT) stated that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the end of last year. With tremors in his hands and muscle pain in his left leg, the PT member has been treating himself with medicinal cannabis since February.
The revelation was made by Suplicy to the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper. In an interview, the deputy stated that the disease is in its initial stage and, for now, its symptoms are mild.
“I had certain tremors in my hands, specifically when eating, holding cutlery, eating soup. I was shaking a little”, said the PT member in the interview. “I also had muscle pain in my left leg.” He also said that he had some imbalance, which caused him to almost fall when he tripped over an object.
Suplicy said he had imported a bottle of industrialized cannabis and defended that its distribution be regulated in Brazil. Currently, only patients with some purchasing power are able to afford treatment.
In the interview, the deputy stated that he is taking five drops of the medicine at breakfast, five drops in the afternoon and another five in the afternoon. He also uses Prolopa, a medicine against Parkinson’s.
This Tuesday (19/9), Suplicy intends to participate in a public hearing at the Participatory Legislation Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. The group will discuss the regulation of the cultivation and distribution of cannabis in the country.
